Planning around burnout
Burnout is long-term exhaustion, often with a sense of distance from your work and of doing less of it well. A better plan does not end it. What a plan can do is ask less of you while you recover, and keep the few things that matter from slipping.
What burnout is
Burnout research describes three parts: exhaustion, a growing distance or cynicism towards the work, and a sense of getting less done. It builds up when demands stay higher than the resources to meet them for a long time.
Autistic adults describe a related experience, autistic burnout: long-term exhaustion, losing skills they usually have, and less tolerance for sensory input, often after a long time of masking and meeting expectations that do not fit them. It is described by the people who live it, and it is not the same as depression.

Plan for the energy you have
A plan made for your best week is a plan you will not meet in a hard one, and not meeting it adds to the weight. In a low period it makes sense to plan fewer things, shorter sessions and more rest, and to decide in advance what can wait.
Four things to try
- Pick the two or three things that really must happen this week, and let the rest wait.
- Shorten sessions instead of cancelling them: ten minutes still counts.
- Put rest in the plan as time of its own, not as what is left over.
- Talk to a doctor or someone you trust if the exhaustion goes on for weeks.
How Sailyn handles a hard stretch
After a heavy week, Sailyn offers to make the next day lighter, and Too much right now clears Now down to one small thing. Just 5 minutes starts the smallest possible session, nothing counts consecutive days, and when today holds more than the time left, Sailyn shows what stays and what moves before anything changes.
Sailyn is a planner and a focus timer. It is not a medical device, it treats nothing, and nothing on these pages is advice about a condition.
Know what you need to do, but can't get started? Sailyn gives you one next step, a plan that adapts, and no penalty for difficult days.
