Forgetting to eat

Forgetting to eat is easy when you are deep in something: hunger is a quiet signal, and absorbed attention does not hear quiet signals well. Many people with ADHD or autism describe whole days where a meal simply did not happen. What works is less about willpower than about putting meals into the day where they cannot be overlooked.

Why hunger goes unnoticed

Noticing what is going on inside your body, such as hunger, thirst or tiredness, is called interoception. Research separates how accurately people sense these signals from how aware they are of their own accuracy, and both vary a lot from person to person. When attention is locked on a task, those signals have even less room.

A skipped meal tends to show up later as a dip: harder to focus, quicker to feel overwhelmed, more likely to stop for the day. So a meal is not time taken from the work. It is part of what keeps the work going in the afternoon.

Put meals in the plan, not in your memory

A meal with a time in the plan is something a plan can protect. A meal that waits for you to feel hungry has to compete with whatever is in front of you, and it usually loses.

Four things to try

  1. Give each meal a rough time and a window, rather than a fixed minute.
  2. Keep something easy to eat near where you work.
  3. When a meeting or class lands on a meal, move the meal rather than drop it.
  4. Drink something whenever you start a new session.

How Sailyn handles meals

In Planning and wellbeing, meals have their own times. On Balance, Sailyn reminds you when it is time to eat. On Priority, it plans your day around them and Now waits while a meal is due, always with a way to carry on. When a class lands on a meal, it offers to move the meal, and meals are never counted or paid like work.

Sailyn is a planner and a focus timer. It is not a medical device, it treats nothing, and nothing on these pages is advice about a condition.
